Eye bags and dark circles are what we refer to as the lower eyelid fat pads. Usually due to poor lifestyle habits, such as drinking, smoking, unhealthy diet and staying late, they can start losing volume and become visibly saggy. In the past, the most popular way to get rid of eye bags was through blepharoplasty or lower eyelid surgery. Performed typically from inside the eyelid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty) or through an incision in the skin just below the lash line, it was a fairly invasive procedure to remove excess fat.
Luckily, these days there are quite a few home remedies you can try that promise quick and visible results.
Drinking plenty of water is the first step to get rid of puffy eyes. Keeping the body well hydrated ensures there is less water retention and no swinging in the under-eye area. Between 8 and 10 glasses a day is considered optimal, but you should also remember to reduce your salt, caffeine and carbonated beverage intake.
2. Cold Spoons
Holding chilled metal spoons against your eye for a few minutes until the spoon becomes warm is surprisingly effective. It brings puffiness, tightens the skin around the eyes and relaxes tires eyes.
3. Tea Bags
An easy and effective home remedy that soothes tired eyes and reduces under eye bags. The anti-irritant properties of the herbs reduce swelling and make for a nice aromatherapy treatment. In addition to reducing inflammation and redness, tea bags also relieve tiredness and stress. Soak the tea bags in warm water before placing on your eyelids and leave for 10 to 15 minutes. Soothing teas like chamomile or peppermint are the best choice.
4. Cucumber slices
Chilled or fresh cucumber slices are ideal for treating under eye bags. Their natural enzymes and astringent properties help reduce inflammation and tighten the skin. An added benefit is the reduction of wrinkles and dark circles around your eyes.
5. Cosmetic solutions
Depending on the severity of the under eye bags you may want to consider a more permanent solution. Sometimes the natural process of aging in combination with certain habits and diets take their toll on the appearance of the skin, but there are certain procedures to correct that. Hyaluronic fillers are particularly effective in improving the appearance of the under-eye area. Once injected under the eyes, the filler makes the contours of the eye socket appear more youthful and sculpted.
Remember that in some cases the appearance of under eye bags can be an indication of an allergy or a serious medical condition. Always try to follow a healthy lifestyle that includes eating a balanced diet, spending time outdoors and going regularly for a check-up.
